Annual Pool Electrical Safety Checks

Pool season is almost upon us again.

Whether you are responsible for your family-owned pool or a commercial pool this year could be the perfect time to get your pool’s electrical systems inspected by a professional electrician. This can help to ensure that the pool equipment & more importantly the people in the pool are protected from a potentially hazardous situation.

Upgrading your pool’s lighting from a 120v lighting system to a safer low voltage 12v or 24v lighting system can also be a step in the right direction in lowering the risk of a potential shock within your pool.

The voltage required to run these types of LED lighting falls below the 36v safety voltage threshold which essentially means that even if pool has an electrical leakage problem due to the lighting the electrical shock potential within the water is far less likely to harm the human body.

An often overlooked & rarely requested inspection is having your electrician check the equipotential bonding around the pool to ensure all metal components such as handrails, lights & other metal surfaces around the pool & deck area are bonded properly together.

Pool electrocutions are rare but with that said there have been 60 reported deaths & 50 serious electrocutions incidents related to pools in the past 13 years.

One simple & inexpensive tool to help prevent this type of mishap is a device called SHOCK ALERT. The device is simply tossed into the pool & will alert you to a potentially dangerous electrical potential in the water. These types of devices generally run between $140-$200.

Annual safety checks related to your pool are essential in keeping not only your equipment in good working order but more importantly keeping the people that enjoy your pool safe.
