The Many Benefits of Combining a Chlorine Generator with a Low-Pressure UV System: Part Two

The location we chose for our test site was busy commercial indoor spa at a club in Salem OR. The water volume was around 3,500 gallons and bather load per day was over 150, they had to drain every 3 days, due to very poor water quality and user complaints about the odors rising off the surface, especially when the jets were turned on. The operators also complained about the corrosion of metal fittings in the room. The existing sanitizer was a chlorine generator. This is what the Operator sent me a few weeks later

  • We were draining the spa 3X a week, at times, due to water getting “tired”, looking/smelling bad, high Combines and high Alkalinity (CO2)
  • We have not drained the spa in last 14 days; we back washed filters at mid-point only.
  • Water looks incredible, clarity is better than I have ever seen
  • Our spa used to average 1.4-1.6 combined chlorine….it is now hovering at .2 for an average (twice a day tests)
  • Our Chlorine usage has gone down which has decreased CO2 usage…. after 7 days our Alkalinity is only at 80. (started at 60)
  • At this point I’m very optimistic about being able to reduce our drains to 2-3 per month max, while maintaining better quality water and using less Chlorine/CO2.

My sense of relief and exuberating was overwhelming! Finally, I had found, according to my own barometer, my “perfect” sanitizing system. Let me break it down for you

UV is a critical component in keeping water safe, but the cost of a Medium-Pressure unit is significant. Here I can couple a commercial chlorine generator with a Low-Pressure UV system for about the same cost to the client. Additionally, the lamps and sleeves are way less expensive, and there is no need for expensive annual service contracts. We provide all troubleshooting and lamp and sleeve replacement instruction videos on our You Tube channel, and will, if the clients are hesitant, work with them via a video link to walk them through all trouble shooting and maintenance.

In conclusion, in my 15+ years of working with this combination, I have yet to be disappointed with the amazing water quality and our clients are happy to have control of their own equipment and not have to wait weeks for repairs or service.
