The Many Benefits of Combining a Chlorine Generator with a Low-Pressure UV system

My company has been championing commercial chlorine generators for 25+ years now, and all the benefits we preached back then, have been shown to be true, which is the reason for these devices now being the most popular residential pool product in US history!

One of the many benefits of these devices is that, when it is producing chlorine the level of chlorine in the cell chamber is very high so it, in effect, “shocks” out  lot of the chloramines resulting in less of them in the pool area, but the cell, for overproduction reasons, is activated by a chemistry controller as needed to keep the chlorine level at a consistent level, so it’s “shocking” capability is reduced.

It was only in the late 90’s that we became aware of Ultra Violet (UV) systems that were being offered to large competitive pools, these were all medium Pressure systems, and they were very expensive and required specialized factory training to work on them, neither of which fit our model, which was to provide our clients with TMI equipment that could be serviced and troubleshot by the facility staff with TMI providing remote support. But I knew that this was the direction we as an industry needed to be headed in.

It was at a World Health conference that I heard Prof. Chip Blatchley from Purdue University talk about Low Pressure UV, and their effectiveness at reducing chloramines in commercial pools. These were a lot less complex pieces of equipment, less expensive and seemed like they could fit our model perfectly.

We partnered with a French company as there were no US made Low Pressure (LP) systems available at that time.

Our initial tests on our company pool provided exciting results; we thought we could not get clearer water than with a Salt Pure® system, boy were we blown away, after a few turnovers the added clarity was remarkable. Now we had to run the ultimate test: how would the combination of Salt Pure® and Low-Pressure UV work to remove/eliminate chloramines from a very busy commercial spa, and what other benefits would it demonstrate.
